To turn on the 3D chessboard in glChess, now include in gnome-games 2.8, do the following:

  3. Download python-gtkglext1

  4. Install python-gtkglext1
    sudo dpkg -i python-gtkglext1_1.1.0-2feisty_i386.deb

In the 26th March 2007 (Season 4 Episode 15) episode of LugRadio the question was proposed:

If you could go back in time and change something to make Linux more successful, what would it be?

I think I would like to go back in time and encourage Linus to create a “Linux Code of Conduct” something like the Ubuntu Code of Conduct. I remember trying Slackware in 1994 or 1995, I got it to install fine, but had troubles with my modem. I asked for help on one of the Linux IRC channels, but was told to RTFM and f*** off. While RTFM may be a correct answer, it is not the best answer. I have heard many stories like this about the early days of Linux, instead of getting help, people were flamed and told to leave.

I think if the Linux community had the ideas of collaboration and respect as early core values, we may had many more early adopters of Linux.

I’m still a fan of superhero comics, and at 39 years old I do a mean imitation of the Comic Book Guy. Here are some web sites that show the funnier side of the superhero genre.

  1. Seanbaby’s Superfriends Page (NSFW-ish): This page dares to ask the question, why does a woman who grows a 100 foot tall wear a leopard skirt.
  2. Superdickery.com (NSFW-ish): Before the age of political correctness, comic book covers did not always show Superman as the symbol of truth, justice, and the America Way, and things were just weird.
  3. Superman: How it should have ended (DIVX)(YouTube): Well, it does make sense.
  4. Secret Wars Re-Enactment Society: Civil War Re-Enactment is a popular hobby in America, what if a group decided to re-enact Marvel’s Secret Wars.

If open source is all about choice, how come our community likes to fight over these choices so much. Everyday we argue over RPM vs. DEB, KDE vs. Gnome, Ubuntu vs. Fedora Core vs OpenSUSE vs. [insert your favorite distro here], and the never ending battle of VI vs. Emacs.

Lately the Gnome vs. KDE battle has recently heated up, with Linus Torvalds taking some pot shots at Gnome. It is a shame, after the lackluster release of Windows Vista, that the Linux community can’t put aside their differences and really show what Linux is capable of. The truth is that KDE and Gnome could learn a lot from each other.

One thing KDE and Gnome developers could do is get rid of the idea KDE/Gnome applications. Design a framework where applications could be build for either desktop environment with the look and feel and system integration working on either desktop environment. I’m not a programmer, so this may be impossible.

Congratulations to the Feisty Development Team on the release of Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) Herd 4. There are many great features in this release, but the one undocumented one I have noticed is the ease of installation on my Macbook Pro. It is a little trickier than a base Ubuntu install, but no harder than installing Windows XP under OS X Bootcamp. This should be an install that even a non-techie will be comfortable doing.

You can find full instructions at here (soon), and also on the Ubuntu Wiki.
